Old Magic
Jadis tells the dwarf accompanying her and Edmund that without four human occupants for the thrones at Cair Paravel, the prophecies cannot be fulfilled, and Edmund, the fourth coregent, is in her possession. They discuss dispatching Edmund before they even finish their journey to Aslan, but the Stone Table is the right place to do it, Jadis claims.
Aslanâs followers rescue Edmund and the Lion tells Peter, Susan, and Lucy thereâs no need to discuss his failings; they are past, and Edmund is contrite and taken with Aslan. When Jadis gets near Aslanâs pavilion, she requests and Aslan grants her safe passage through his lines to him, where she argues that according to the sacred writing on the Stone Table itself and the âDeep Magicâ under which Narnia was created, âYou know that every traitor [referring to Edmund] belongs to me as my lawful prey and that for every treachery I have a right to a kill.â
Aslan orders the area cleared so he can talk to the witch alone, after which he announces, somberly, that his negotiations have succeeded in getting her to renounce her claim on Edmundâs blood. But while Aslan seems troubled, the witch seems gleeful as they part.
